International Dot Day 2021

Hello fellow Educators! Happy Dot Day!

It's that time of year again the day educators all over the world celebrate Peter H. Reynolds book The Dot. Every September 15th-ish we honor the books message about creativity and the courage to express yourself. Those of you who might be unfamiliar with the day I strongly suggest checking it the website. At ACS we started our celebrations this week and plan to continue it next week.

First, we started with a round table in the LC. I covered it with white butcher paper and asked the kids to make their own mark on the table. I gave them coloring pencils and some lids so they could make their own dots. The students definitely made their marks this week and hopefully more next week.

Secondly, I collaborated with the K-2 Art teacher to create a mural of their work displayed in the Learning Commons. During their Art class I would read to them The Dot and talk about international Dot Day and Peter H. Reynolds. I also showcased the other two books in the Creatrilogy. Then the Art teacher would talk to the students about experimenting with different art mediums the children would then experiment on their own to create their own mark. The kids really enjoyed the class and they had fun using watercolors, oil pastels and tissue paper to create different effects.

Lastly, we sent out Shannon McClintock Miller's Dot Day Choice Board from last year to all the teachers so that they too can celebrate in their classrooms.

Are you celebrating Dot Day in your school?
